If you’ve recently been prescribed an orthotic device, or you’re considering one for the first time, it’s natural to have questions about how they work, how long they take to feel comfortable, and whether you’ll need to wear them long-term.

Orthotic devices are used to support movement, improve alignment, and help people manage a wide range of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. However, every person’s needs are different, which means the type of orthosis prescribed and the expected outcomes can vary considerably.

How Long Does It Take for Orthotics to Start Working?

This is one of the most common questions people ask when they first receive an orthotic device.

According to Zeshan, the timeframe can vary depending on both the type of orthosis and the condition being treated.

“Some people notice improved comfort and pain relief within the first one to two weeks, while others may need four to eight weeks before they experience the full benefits.”

The body often needs time to adapt to the changes in alignment, support, and weight distribution that an orthotic device provides. Because of this, mild discomfort during the early stages is not unusual.

Gradually increasing wear time can help make the adjustment period more comfortable. Ready-made braces may feel comfortable more quickly, while custom orthotic devices can sometimes require a longer adjustment period.

If discomfort is affecting daily activities, it’s important to speak with your orthotist, as adjustments to the device may be needed.

Do You Have to Wear Orthotics Forever?

The answer depends on why the orthosis was prescribed in the first place.

Some orthotic devices are intended for short-term use. Fracture braces and post-operative orthoses, for example, are often worn only until healing has occurred.
Other conditions may benefit from ongoing orthotic support.

Zeshan explains that people recovering from a stroke may continue wearing an orthosis to assist with balance and support, while individuals with flat feet may use orthotic insoles long term to help restore balance, reduce pain, and help prevent secondary issues.

Orthotic requirements can also change over time.

Factors such as age, body weight, rehabilitation progress, and activity levels can all influence whether a device remains appropriate. Regular follow-up appointments help ensure the orthosis continues to meet the individual’s needs.

Can Orthotics Weaken Your Feet?

A common misconception is that wearing orthotics causes the feet to become weaker over time.

According to Zeshan, this is not the case.

“Appropriately prescribed and properly fitted orthotic devices do not weaken the feet.”

Instead, orthoses are designed to support people while helping them remain active during recovery and rehabilitation. They are often used alongside other management strategies such as gait training, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

Rather than replacing movement, orthotic devices are typically used as part of a broader treatment approach.

How Are Custom Orthotics Made?

Every custom orthotic device is designed around the individual’s condition, anatomy, and functional requirements.

The process begins with an assessment, followed by measurements of the affected body part. Depending on the device being created, this may involve a plaster cast, detailed anatomical measurements, or a 3D scan.

Most custom orthoses are manufactured using medical-grade plastics, although specialised devices may use thermosetting plastics depending on the application.

Advances in technology have also changed the way many orthotic devices are produced.

Digital scanning systems can capture detailed body shapes, while computer-aided design (CAD) software allows orthotists to customise devices with a high degree of precision. In some cases, 3D printing technology is then used to fabricate the finished orthosis.

What Conditions Can Orthotics Treat?

Orthoses are used to support people with a wide range of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions that affect movement, alignment, and function.

Some of the more common conditions include flat feet, plantar fasciitis, high arches, scoliosis, fractures, arthritic changes in certain joints, and conditions requiring post-surgical support.

Orthotic devices are also commonly used in diabetic foot care to help reduce pressure and improve weight distribution.

For children, orthoses may be prescribed for conditions such as cerebral palsy and clubfoot to support development and walking.
