Conjoined Twins
Hamilton - Waikato
At Orthotic House, our work is built on generations of expertise—quite literally. Our director, a third-generation orthotist, was privileged to play a crucial role in one of New Zealand’s most remarkable paediatric surgeries.
In October 2004, a dedicated team of nearly 40 medical professionals at Waikato Hospital achieved a groundbreaking feat: the successful separation of conjoined twins. Led by paediatric surgeon Askar Kukkady, the procedure took five months of meticulous planning, involving surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, and specialists from across the region.
As part of this effort, our director supported the surgical team in preparation for the complex separation, ensuring the twins had the best possible outcome. Today, those two children are thriving, a testament to the power of collaboration and specialist expertise.
This story is just one example of how orthotists contribute beyond the clinic—helping to shape lives, support innovation, and bring world-class care to those who need it most.
The Role of Orthotics in Stroke & Neurological Rehabilitation
Hamilton - Waikato
After suffering a stroke at age 55, Michael lost movement in his right leg and struggled with foot drop, making walking unsafe. His orthotist fitted him with a lightweight, carbon-fiber ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) to keep his foot in the right position. With therapy and his new brace, Michael regained confidence in walking, avoiding falls and maintaining his independence. His orthotist’s care meant he could still walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding—a milestone he thought he might miss.

My 7 year old daughter Isabel has mild Cerebral Palsy and has been wearing splints/AFO's on both legs since she was a toddler. In all the time we have used the services of Colin and Janeen at Orthotic House.
Isabel has new splints made a couple of times a year and has also had night splints and shoe inserts developed for her. I have always found the staff to be efficient, knowledgeable and helpful, and they have always delivered a great product as promised.
It can sometimes be difficult to convince a small child that it's OK to wear splints but Colin's personality makes him a great professional to deal with. Isabel actually looks forward to seeing him when new splints are to be made!
The team are always warm and welcoming and as a parent, I appreciate how well they listen and advise me on the best options for my daughter.
I have no hesitation in recommending their service as I am sure they are the best in the Waikato.
